Luxe Pack New York Opens with 165 Exhibitors

The 11th edition of the creative packaging show stays true to form with a larger-than-ever sold-out show floor and a two-day roster of top-notch educational sessions.


When Luxe Pack New York swings into action on May 15–16, at The Altman Building and Metropolitan Pavilion (135 West 18th Street between 6th & 7th Avenues, in Manhattan), a sold-out show floor will feature more than 165 exhibitors displaying innovative packaging for all luxury sectors, including cosmetics/fragrance, personal care, food, wine and spirits, fashion/accessories, jewelry/watches and more. An 8,500 square-foot, second-floor area, called “The Gallery,” has been added to accommodate increased numbers of exhibitors as well as the seminar room.

Following is a look at a selection of sessions that will be held over the two days of the event:

Wednesday, May 15

10:15am: Product Orchestration: Optimizing Package and Formula Development to Create Tomorrow’s Star Products.

Speakers include Eve Pearl, president, Eve Pearl Cosmetics; Brian Fox, founder, Genealogy Beauty, LLC; Alexander DeNegri, vice president of R&D, Genealogy Beauty, LLC; David Dustin, chief operating officer for Eve Pearl /Great Faces, Inc.; and Sandy Schneider, global cosmetic regulatory & compliance, Doug Mar Consultants

A panel of industry leaders will share their knowledge of successful beauty branding, stressing the importance of the harmony between all elements involved in creating uber products for a global culture.

11:30am: Innovative Packaging That Translates Across Global Markets

Speakers include:Dr. Benjamin Punchard, senior global packaging analyst, Mintel; Scott Widro, executive VP of operations and supply chain, Gurwitch Products; and Renee Hartmann, co-founder, China Luxury Advisors. Moderated and created by Jamie Matusow, editor, Beauty Packaging magazine

In a global market, what do beauty brands need to keep in mind when products and packaging have to transcend language and borders? From fonts to colors, these experts lay out the essentials.

12:45pm: Packaging Megatrends: The Hottest Innovation from Around the Globe

Dr. Benjamin Punchard, global packaging director, Mintel, spotlights the messages and materials that are setting the trends around the world.

2:oopm: That’s Entertainment

Moderated and created by Marc Rosen, president, Marc Rosen Associates, this panel includes Karen Grant, vice president and global beauty industry analyst, The NPD Group—and a member of Beauty Packaging’s Board of Advisors; Lorrie King, senior global marketing director, Coty Beauty; Gail Boye, president, Ideation by Gail Boye; and Noreen Dodge, global marketing & creative development consultant, Elizabeth Arden

Creating packaging that entertains and amuses seems to be a strong direction in new fragrance packaging—from Nicki Minaj’s pink wigged bottle to Lady Gaga’s black and gold Fame flacon. The panel will deal with the marketing, retailing, packaging and future trending of this new reality.

4:00pm: Decision Making in Life Cycle Assessment for Packaging Sustainability

Dr. Hae Chang Gea, director, packaging engineering program, Rutgers University

The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a method to measure the environmental impact of a product’s life stages from cradle to grave, and is widely used for analyzing packaging sustainability. But, the current state of the LCA tools still have many limitations and cannot implement a decision maker’s preference into the process easily. Rutgers implemented a decision maker’s preference in the LCA for packaging sustainability: the Pareto Active Set Selection (PASS) method and the Design Preference Function (DPF). Design examples are presented to demonstrate this decision-making process.

Thursday, May 16

9:30am: Innovations from Exhibitors

11:30am Spirited Designs

Speakers include Jagatjoti Khalsa, founder and CEO for Altar Peter Johnson, Partner, Swerve, Inc.; and Norman Kay, CEO and chief creative officer, IBC Shell Packaging. Moderated and created by Linda Casey, Package Design

The panel will offer advice on attracting new fans for a spirit brand or a liquor category.

1:45pm: French Luxury vs U.S. Luxury: Similarities and Differences

Thomas Serrano, president, Havas Luxe, will look at how two different cultures perceive and implement luxury communication platforms, specifically when it comes to haute brand experiences.

2:45pm: Beauty & Personal Care Products: Consumers Crave the Last Drop

Based on the findings of a recent MWV-commissioned study, Steve Kazanjian, VP global creative, MWV, will discuss the correlation between packaging and overall product satisfaction.

3:45pm: Luxury Market in Brazil: Characteristics and Opportunities

Luiz Alberto Bozzolo, editor in chief, Household & Cosmetics magazine, will lead a panel on the rapidly growing Brazilian market.
